Making everyone equally poor is not progress.

In 1936 during the Spanish Civil War, the CNT-FAI took control of Catalonia, Aragon and the Basque regions and established an anarchist socialist society made of syndicalist unions, enterprises were put under worker control, productivity doubled, women's rights improved, working conditions improved among other things.

To quote George Orwell in Homage to Catalonia:

Up here in Aragon one was among tens of thousands of people, mainly though not entirely of working-class origin, all living at the same level and mingling on terms of equality. In theory it was perfect equality, and even in practice it was not far from it. There is a sense in which it would be true to say that one was experiencing a foretaste of Socialism, by which I mean that the prevailing mental atmosphere was that of Socialism. Many of the normal motives of civilized life — snobbishness, money-grubbing, fear of the boss, etc. — had simply ceased to exist. The ordinary class-division of society had disappeared to an extent that is almost unthinkable in the money-tainted air of England; there was no one there except the peasants and ourselves, and no one owned anyone else as his master

I don't know about you, but that seems like progress to me.

It's actually more like equality in power.

I don't see how workers having direct control over production is poverty, but ok.

"direct control" over such things didn't make them nobles. You would have us all impoverished.

It does make the workplace more democratic, gives you more autonomy, which again i don't see how that's poverty.

Also there wasn't anybody impoverished in the CNT-FAI controlled regions of Spain.

Quite the
 opposite actually:

The USSR was bound to fall at one point. As it was and unadaptable system. But again remember Socialism is a varied ideology. From Authoritarian to Libertarian, the USSR was a Authoritarian socialist state with a bit of bureaucracy (But when you have a country that big what do you expect). While there are other nations that have varied socialism and social programs that better the country. The US needs some of these ideas, nationalization of the banks, as the fed is printing our money yet we have no control over them. And the healthcare industry, in this country it's a fucking mess.

I hope that at least explains my thoughts. Also what country are you from?

I'm not even a full socialist. More or less i'm a social democrat with libertarian leanings. Theres so much shit in this country that is just mind boggleingly wrong and stupid. Change is needed. Are taxes are going to fighting the Russians in 1980 and other worthless shit like bailing out banks that gambled with our money.

Libertarian socialism exists. What the Soviets have is totalitarianism resting on an authoritarian socialist "utopia".

In our case democracy and the inability to adapt rapidly and very corrupt political echelons ruined it. With a mass wave of privatization in the early 90s.

Yes Indeed, dont get me started on Pro-EU politics and border line exploitation by more powerful countries and corporations and lets not forget the complete and utter polution of our history to a point even locals are dim wittingly defending pro-communist propaganda.
